چکیده

J. Mankoff H. Fait R. Juang User studies involving users with disabilities often incur greater financial cost and complexity than those involving general populations. Consequently, accessibility issues may not be identified during the earlier phases of software design, when designs are still malleable. Additionally, it can be difficult to create controlled studies with multiple groups of very similar subjects due to the extremely heterogeneous nature of the impact of many motor and visual disabilities. This paper examines the feasibility of simulating the interaction experiences of users with low vision or motor impairments. Based on empirical studies in the literature of the impact of these impairments on the experience of computer use, we have developed EASE (Evaluating Accessibility through Simulation of User Experience), a tool that can help developers identify disability-related usability problems early in the design process. EASE can also be used to allow fine-grained exploration of user capabilities that are difficult to control, such as achievable typing speed. We present a study of the use of word prediction software that illustrates the value of fine-grained control over typing speed and that also shows word prediction is most useful at typing speeds between 5 and 8 words per minute.

Evaluating accessibility through simulating the experiences of user users with vision or motor impairments

User studies involving users with disabilities often incur greater financial cost and complexity than those involving general populations. One consequence of this is that accessibility issues may not be identified during the earlier phases of design, when designs are still malleable. Additionally, it can be difficult to create controlled studies with multiple groups of very similar subjects due...

Holistic accessibility evaluation using VR simulation of users with special needs

In this paper, we present a novel methodology to evaluate the accessibility of products using virtual prototypes. The novelty is that the product evaluation is based on simulating the interactions of users with physical deficiencies in virtual and immersive environments. Virtual users with special needs, e.g. elderly or impaired people, were modelled using both literature data and real subjects...

Relationship between Visual Impairments and Motor Problems Children 3-6 Age with Low Birth Weight

Abstract Birth weight is one of the most important indicators of neonatal health in any society and is considered as the best tool to measure the outcome of pregnancy and the most important factor in determining the incidence of disease or death of the infant. The purpose of this study was to investigating relationship between visual impairments and motor problems in children 3-6 age with ve...

Adapting a Multimedia Distance Learning Environment for Vision Impairments

Distance learning applications provide valuable opportunities to users with disabilities. To enhance the accessibility of the distance-learning portal to vision impaired users, we utilize analytical studies on human vision to develop a visibility based adaptation algorithm. Using this adaptation the quality levels and layout of the portal is adapted to enhance the visibility, to users with vari...

Adapting Web Information to Disabled and Elderly Users

Substantial research and standardization efforts already exist to make it easier for people with physical impairments to perceive and interact with web pages. This paper describes work aimed at catering the content of web pages to the needs of different users, including elderly people and users with vision and motor impairments. The AVANTI system and related efforts in the AVANTI project will b...
